George Mercer, principal of Mercer Marketing, is an independent corporate copywriter and consultant with a growing career coaching practice.

He is currently serving a diverse set of clients from large corporations to small businesses to individuals…in a variety of industries from high tech to retail to financial services to construction products. With some notable exceptions, he has specialized in business-to-business marketing. Recent corporate writing assignments have included web sites, newsletters, direct marketing campaigns, capabilities brochures, print ads, and speeches.

At the same time, he has developed a consulting practice concentrating on smaller organizations with a need to define, develop and deploy marketing programs suited to their own unique styles and situations.

As an extension of his work with small businesses, he branched out into the field of career consulting/coaching. He has facilitated the Marketing Professionals Network, a growing support group for marketers seeking new jobs or experiencing transitions in their careers, for nearly ten years. Over two thousand marketers have attended meetings since its inception. Currently, there are over 400 active members. Last year, 110 MPNers found new jobs and this year even more are likely to land new positions.

Using his knowledge and training in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator instrument along with his intimate knowledge of the job search process gleaned from working with the group, he offers career consultation and coaching services to individuals privately as well as on an outplacement basis. He began his career in marketing by selling antique glassware through the mail. From there he went on to spend nearly ten years at The DR Group (formerly the Dickie Raymond agency). He started as a copywriter and worked his way up to Creative Director. He then went out on his own in 1989 and established Mercer Marketing.

He has shared in numerous direct marketing awards for his work including a Gold DMA Echo Award and a Bronze DMA Echo. In 1992 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the New England Direct Marketing Association for his many years of work on the association’s newsletter, Rollout. He was also chairperson of the the association’s Vision Committee which developed a vision/mission statement for the organization.
